ABOUT AIR POLLUTION
Air pollution is the greatest environmental threat to public health globally and accounts for an estimated 7 million premature deaths every year. Air pollution is a major global health crisis and causes one in nine deaths worldwide. Exposure to PM2.5 reduced average global life expectancy by approximately one year in 2019.
In most cities on any given day air pollution levels are considerably above the air quality guideline levels of 5 µg/m3 recommended by the World Health Organization.
Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5
With every breath we take, we suck in tiny particles that can damage our lungs, hearts, and brains and cause a host of other health problems. The most dangerous of these particles are fine particles 2.5 microns (one thousandth of a millimeter) or less in diameter —shortened as PM2.5, as they can be absorbed directly into the lungs and bloodstream.
The deadliest illnesses linked to PM2.5 air pollution are stroke, heart disease, lung disease, lower respiratory diseases (such as pneumonia), and cancer. High levels of fine particles also contribute to other illnesses, like diabetes, can hinder cognitive development in children and also cause mental health problems.
How to get protected?
Most face masks available in the market do not provide proper protection against PM 2.5 that come out of the exhaust from motorbike and car engines.
In order to get an adequate protection, masks need to have a filter capable of filtering PM2.5 particles and completely seal the face so all the air you breathe gets filtered before entering your lungs.
Surgical or cotton masks do not properly seal, allowing polluted air to flow into the mouth from the sides, top and bottom of the mask. Cotton fabric also has a very open weave that cannot filter the smallest most dangerous pollution particles.
The only solution to that problem is using a mask that provides a high quality filtering material and a design that properly seals the mouth and nose.
